Protecting Your HVAC on the Treasure Coast

During Florida's active hurricane season, air conditioning systems are highly vulnerable. Outdoor condenser units are subject to extreme wind velocities that can turn loose backyard debris, patio furniture, and tree limbs into dangerous high-speed projectiles, crushing coil fins and piercing refrigerant lines.

Additionally, heavy torrential rains and coastal storm surges can flood low-lying properties. Submerging an active compressor's electrical circuit boards or fan motor under standing water can cause permanent short circuits and catastrophic compressor failure once grid power is restored. Taking preventive steps beforehand secures your physical investment and safeguards your home from expensive equipment replacements.

Safe Post-Storm AC Restart Steps

  • 1. Visual Damage Check: Inspect the outdoor unit. Look for debris inside the top grille, dented casing, or if the unit is shifting or tilting on its pad.
  • 2. Clear Surrounding Area: Clear away branches, foliage, and trash wrapped around the condenser coils to restore proper cooling airflow.
  • 3. Inspect for Flooding: If the outdoor condenser was submerged or had standing water around its base, do not restore power. Water must drain completely, and the interior electrical terminals must be checked by a professional.
  • 4. Flip the Breaker: If the unit is dry and clear, restore power at the main electrical breaker first, then wait 5-10 minutes before turning the thermostat cooling back on.
  • 5. Monitor System Behavior: Listen for unusual rattling or grinding noises, and verify that the indoor vents are blowing cold air. If you notice ice build-up or a warm air stream, shut down the system immediately.
