This system acts like a miniature heat pump with an indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor. The two components are attached through a conduit in the exterior wall.  You can install more than one indoor air handler for each outdoor compressor to create a custom solution for your home. There are mini split systems that provide just air conditioning or both heating and cooling like a traditional heat pump.
