Hurricane winds hit the outdoor condenser hardest. Loose patio furniture, yard debris and tree limbs can turn into projectiles that crush coil fins or puncture refrigerant lines, and a unit that isn't anchored well can shift or tip on its pad. Clearing the yard and checking the tie-down straps lowers both risks.
Heavy rain and storm surge can also flood low-lying yards. If floodwater rises into the outdoor unit, its wiring, contactor, capacitor, fan motor and any control board can short out when power comes back. That is why the checklist has you shut the AC breakers off before the storm.
After the storm, wait until the power is steady before you turn the AC back on. Walk around the outdoor unit first: clear branches and debris off and around it, and look for a unit that has shifted or tipped on its pad, a bent or crushed refrigerant line, or a damaged cabinet. If you see any of that, or the unit sat in floodwater, leave the breakers off and call us to have it checked.
